Solar Panels on a Cloudy Day

Residential solar panels work their best on a clear day, with the sun up and blazing to its full potential. Everyone’s home solar panel works without a hitch and every house with one enjoys the electricity that it generates.

But what about if the day is a gloomy dreary day, will all those dark clouds covering almost all of the sky and not a single ray of sun shine is in sight. Start with the morning on a cloudy day, and for sure you will think about how the effects of clouds can effect the generation of power by your home solar panel.

You are right – sadly clouds, those thick blackish ones especially have negative effect on your residential solar panels. In fact, the generation of electricity by your solar panels can be lessened because of them.

Effectiveness and efficiency are affected by clouds and dark days because home solar panels are dependent on the amount of sunlight that hits them. In the same light (no pun intended), any RV solar panel will be negatively effected in producing power for your camper or trailer.

Simply put, heavy clouds covering the sun render our residential solar panels less effective and below the peak production level of energy. You can make do with the sun occasionally peaking into the clouds, plus the fact that the clouds themselves reflect the light that comes from the sun into the panels.

To alleviate such problem, you might want to position your solar gadgets facing the eastern direction, especially during the morning if the skies are clear. If your battery is small, replace it with a larger system in order to maximize the amount of stored power – in case you have to deal with consecutive sunless days.

A solar tracker would also allow your energy collection to be more efficient on a cloudy day.

Have you ever seen solar panel covered roofs or school zone signs with solar panels atop and wondered how these solar panels work and what's going on "behind the panels?"
